warningsignpuede / podría

Puede and can are very similar in that they can be used to express permission, ability and possibility.

However, an important difference between puede and can is that the latter is only used to express a general possibility, while puede is often used for specific possibilities and weak probability. In English we use 'could' or 'may/might' to express this idea.

In the following examples, the Spanish and English meanings are the same:

-Fumar puede matarte Smoking can kill you [possibility, a general truth]

-No puedes caminar por ahí — You can't walk there [permission]

-No puedo terminar esto I can't finish this [ability]

However, when poder es followed by a verb in infinitive, it is sometimes synonymous with 'puede (ser) que+subjunctive', translating as 'might/maybe/could' rather than 'can'. Using podría instead of puede would make the possibility more speculative, while clarifying that we are referring to a specific potencial event rather than a general occurrence.

"Para manifestar el sentido epistémico de conjetura, «poder + infinitivo» alterna con las expresiones semilexicaliazadas 'puede que' y 'puede ser que'. Así, el contenido denotado por 'En el mundo puede haber varios millones de minas terrestres sin detectar' es muy similar a 'Puede que en el mundo haya varios millones...'".2

-¿Quién será? -Pedro, quizá -Puede ser (puede que sea él) Who will/might that be? -Pedro, maybe -It might/could be [it can be]

-Ese error puede costarte caro That mistake might/could cost you lot [puede que te cueste caro]

-Puede haber una buena explicación  — There may be an good explanation [puede que haya]

-Puede pasarle a cualquiera It could/can happen to anyone [Ambiguo en español: 1. es algo que ocurre a veces o 2. es algo potencial que podría ocurrir]

Podría pasarle a cualquiera — It could happen to anyone [Aclara que se refiere a algo potencial; igual no ha ocurrido todavía]

Puede que and puede ser que are used interchangeably in most contexts, although the former is more common in everyday Spanish in Spain.

"poder (ser) que + subjuntivo. Esta construcción, que se da solo en tercera persona del singular, expresa posibilidad (‘ser posible que’). [...] cuando el verbo 'ser' está elidido, el verbo 'poder' solo se conjuga en presente de indicativo, dando lugar a la expresión 'puede que', que se comporta en la práctica como una locución adverbial de sentido análogo a 'quizá': «Puede que me arrepienta de lo que he hecho»".3

As discussed previously, since English is far more limited in its modal verbs, it can be especially confusing for learners of Spanish to differentiate between the past and conditional forms: podía, podría and pudo.

When using the pretérito simple (pudo), context may be necessary to clarify whether the possibility was actually fulfilled or not.2

The following examples highlight the subtle, yet important, difference between puede and can:

In the present:

-El portero puede parar el penalti

The goalkeeper can save the penalty (El portero es capaz de pararlo - habilidad)

or

— The goalkeeper might/may save the penalty (Puede que el portero lo pare -posibilidad)

In the past:

-El portero pudo parar el penalti

The goalkeeper was able to save the penalty (habilidad)

or

The goalkeeper could have saved the penalty (Pudo haberlo parado -posibilidad)

-El ladrón no pudo entrar por la ventana; estaba cerrada por dentro

The thief couldn't enter through the window; it was closed from the inside (no fue capaz -habilidad)

or

The thief couldn't have entered through the window; it was closed from the inside (no es posible que entrara -posibilidad)
