preocuparse por/de

Although the DPD doesn't distinguish between them, there is a subtle difference in meaning between preocuparse por algo and de algo.

"Como intransitivo pronominal significa ‘sentir temor o inquietud por alguien o algo’ y ‘dedicar atención a alguien o algo’. Suele construirse con 'por' o 'de':"1

1) Preocuparse por can be ambiguous because the preposition por may be required as part of a complemento de régimen, or it may be optional when the information is considered a complemento circunstancial.2

When preocuparse means 'to feel worried, anxious or concerned (about something)', close in meaning to angustiarse or inquietarse, the preposition por is usually circumstancial rather than obligatory: por tells us the cause of the worry, just as it tells us the cause of any other thing, e.g. se preocupa por su hijo ≈ se preocupa + porque su hijo está triste (o por el motivo que sea).

However, when preocuparse means 'to care about somebody or something', coming close in meaning to interesarse or sentir inquietud, especially when followed by the infinitive or subjunctive, the preposition por is considered obligatory as part of a complemento de régimen. In other words, if we remove the prepositional phrase, the sentence will no longer have the same meaning, e.g. se preocupa por su hijo ≈ se interesa por su hijo. In this example, if you remove 'por su hijo', the meaning would change to 'angustiarse'.3

"preocuparse por: sentir preocupación o inquietud".4

-No te preocupes por— Don't worry about me [don't feel worry or distress; circunstancial]

It's normal that you're worried about the exam [circunstancial]

-Tengo a alguien que se preocupa por mí — I've got someone who cares about me [complemento de régimen]

-Son visitantes que se preocupan por conocer la ciudad — They are visitors who care about getting to know the city [complemento de régimen; if you remove 'por conocer la ciudad' the meaning would change to 'angustiarse' rather than 'interesarse']

-Se preocupan por que yo tenga dinero suficiente — They see to it that I have enough money [complemento de régimen]

2) With preocuparse de, the information is always a complemento de régimen and can't be omitted. It generally means 'to concern oneself with', 'to see to it', 'to make sure that', similar in meaning to encargarse, ocuparse, asegurarse, or molestarse; in other words, it to tends to mean 'worry' in the sense of influencing an outcome. The use of de is far more common than por when followed by que+subjunctive.5-6

"preocuparse de: dedicar atención a alguien o a cierta cosa; tomar alguien a su cuidado cierta cosa; sentir preocupación ".4

-Nadie se ha preocupado de levantar el teléfono — No one has bothered to pick up the phone

They make sure I've got everything I need

It's important that you see to/worry about the exam first

What do you intend to do? -You mind your own affairs/business / You just worry about your part instead of thinking about everyone else

See to it that you are here at ten sharp

-Sólo preocúpate de traer esas provisiones aquí — You just worry about getting those supplies up here

3) When negating the existence of something to worry about, there are several possible constructions, each of which has its own meaning.

-No tienes de qué / nada de que preocuparte — You've nothing to worry about [todo está controlado/bien]

-No tienes por qué preocuparte — There's no need/reason for you to worry [no hay motivo de preocupación; este 'por' es parte de la expresión 'no tienes por qué' ≈ no tienes motivo por el que; circunstancial]

-No tienes que preocuparte de nada— You don't need to worry about anything [No tienes que hacer nada; de régimen]

-No tienes que preocuparte por su futuro — You don't have to/shouldn't worry about his future [de régimen]

You don't have to worry/shouldn't worry about what happened yesterday [circunstancial]

4) Remember that 'to be worried that/about' is often best translated as 'me/te/le/ + preocupar + infinitivo/que subjuntivo' or 'tener miedo de + infinitivo/que subjuntivo'.7

-Me preocupa no saber nada de él I'm worried about not hearing from him

-Le preocupa que salga mal — He's worried about it going wrong / that it'll go wrong

-Tengo miedo de que no vuelva — I'm worried/afraid that we won't come back
