Rollo is one of those versatile words that can be used in an enormous range of contexts. It has several meanings and is used frequently in spoken Spanish as a kind of crutch word where the speaker doesn't want to be specific:

 

1) boring, pain, discomfort

-Se me ha roto el ordenador otra vez -¡Qué rollo! — My computer has broken again -What a pain!

 

-Esta asignatura es un rollo — This subject is terribly boring/ is a drag

→Es un coñazo

 

-Da rollo tener que pedírselo — It's a hassle/awkward having to ask him

 

2) story, spiel

-Me soltó un rollo — He came out with some spiel

-No me sueltes ese rollo. No me interesa — You can cut the lecture. I'm not interested

 

-Me contó no sé qué rollohistoriamovida de su infancia — He told me some (long-winded) story about his childhood

 

3) scene, kind of thing, style

-Ese rollo no me va — I'm not into that kind of thing

-El collar le da rollo — The necklace is stylish

 

-El rollo de compartir pareja me llama la atención — The swinging scene has caught my eye

-Vienen... Tú sigueme el rollo. Tengo un plan — They're coming. You just play/go along with me. I've got a plan

 

4) business, matter

-Suena peligroso. No quiero meterme en ese rollo — It sounds dangerous; I don't want to get involved in that matter

 

-Esta aplicación es otro rollo; no tiene nada que ver con lo que se encuentra hoy en día  — This application is whole different thing; it's nothing like the typical stuff you find these days

 

5) feeling / atmosphere

-Hay muy buen rollo en el trabajo — There's a great atmosphere at work

-El buenrollismo es una mentira — This everything-is-wonderful business is false

 

-¡Joder, qué mal rollo, tío! — Christ! There's some real bad vibes going on, man ['Mala onda' en Latinoamérica]

-Ese hombre me da mal rollo — That guy is creepy / makes me feel uncomfortable/ gives me the heebie-jeebies

 

-Joder, me acabas de cortar el rollo — Jesus! You've just put a damper on my evening/turned me off [See Seguir el rollo]
