o bien... o bien
When it comes to translating 'either... or' into Spanish, there are several factors to take into consideration.
Similar to 'or', the conjunction o is used to express two or more alternatives. Take the following example:
-Llámame a las cuatro o a las cinco — Call me at four or five o'clock
The use of a single o, in the same way as in English with or, can lead us to interpret the sentence two ways: the options are exclusive (call me at four or call me at five, only one of these two options is possible); or inclusive, where both or other options are possible (call me at four or five or any time around then).
Context and logic will normally make it clear what the speaker wishes to say. In the following examples, the speaker/writer is clearly not saying that the options are exclusive:
-Juan tendrá 25 o 30 años
-La comunidad aceptó las nuevas reglas del juego y nunca más faltó en la mesa familiar una sopa de gallina o unos fritos de papa o una coliflor fresca o un plato de avena
By introducing an additional o before the first option, like either in English, we remove possible ambiguity and present the options as exlusive, where only one is possible. Similar to English, it is mainly used to present just two options.1
-Llámame o a las cuatro o a las cinco — Call me either at four o' clock or at five o' clock
-No puedes tenerlo todo. O aceptas el dinero, o te quedas con la casa — You can't have everything; you can either take the money or you can keep the house
Adding bien reinforces the presence of two or more options, as well as the need to choose between one of them. Bien can be placed before either one of the options or before both of them to further emphasize the choice. O bien is often used only before the second option.2
-Llámame, o bien a las cuatro o (bien) a las cinco — Call me either at four o' clock or at five o' clock
-Tenemos dos opciones: o bien nos quedamos aquí, o bien nos vamos a Madrid — We have two options: we can either stay here or we can go to Madrid
-Te lo puedes quedar, o bien me lo devuelves — You can keep it; either that or you can give me it back ('bien' used to indicate that there are no other options possible. e.g. sell it, it avoids ambiguity)
In longer or more complex phrases, bien can be used to avoid ambiguity, especially where there are other uses of o.
-Llámame o escríbeme, o bien a las cuatro, o bien a las cinco
To complicate matters, bien alone can also be used as a conjunction to present two or more options. In this sense, it is similar to (ya) sea... sea, used to express alternation between options rather than the choice between them. This use of bien is generally only used in formal contexts.3
-La perfección absoluta, bien en las artes, bien en las demás cosas, no es fácil de conseguir — Absolute perfection, whether it be in the arts or anything else, is not easy to achieve
-Cada día, cientos de personas pasan por la zona, bien en coche, bien a pie — Every day hundreds of people pass through the area, whether it be/either by car or on foot
Notice that in English, when the nouns are singular the verb is always conjugated in singular, whereas in spanish it can be conjugated either in singular or plural depending on several factors:
When o expresses indifference rather than mutually exclusive options, both singular and plural are possible. The plural is preferred when the subjects precede the verb; when offering the choice between one or the other, the singular is preferred (see concordancia sujeto-verbo).4-5
-Mi madre o mi padre tienen que asistir a la reunión — My mum or my dad has to attend the meeting
-Tiene(n) que asisir o mi padre o mi madre — Either my mum or my dad has to attend the meeting
-No pueden venir los dos. Tendrá que asistir o bien tu madre o bien tu padre — They can't both come. Either your mum or your dad will have to attend the meeting
