greenmanadvertir (de) que

The verbs advertir and avisar often cause problems among learners of Spanish. This is partly because their usage varies between countries, alternating between the transitive and intransitive forms; and partly because the recommendations given in the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (DPD) are at odds with popular usage in Spain.1-2

Advertir

 1. Advertir algo = To notice something.

This use of advertir is constant throughout the Spanish-speaking world and rarely takes the preposition de.

-El policía advirtió que había algo raro en el coche — The policeman noticed there was something strange in the car

-Nadie advirtió su presencia — Nobody noticed he was there

2. Advertir (a alguien) de algo= To warn (someone) about/of something.

The DPD recommends using the acusativo (lo, la) for the person since it is the subject in the passive

"En esta construcción el complemento de persona es directo, pues funciona como sujeto de la pasiva [...] Por ello, cuando este complemento es un pronombre átono de tercera persona, deben emplearse las formas lo(s), la(s)".2

-Advirtieron del/sobre/acerca del peligro —They warned of the danger

-Advirtieron a Juan del peligro — They warned Juan of the danger

Lo advirtieron del peligro — They warned him of the danger

Juan fue advertido del peligro — Juan was warned of the danger

However, despite the DPD's recommendations about using the direct object for the person, the dativo (le) is actually far more commonly used with the preposition de and is seen in the NGLE.3

-Le advirtieron del peligro — They warned him of the danger

When the object is a nominal clause (de que clause) the de is usually omitted in Spanish outside Spain, while in Spain the de is usually kept.

-Advirtieron (de) que había peligro — They warned that there was danger

-Advirtieron a Juan (de) que había peligro — They warned Juan that there was danger

Le (lo) advirtieron (de) que había peligro — They warned him that there was danger

Juan fue advertido (de) que había peligro — Juan was warned that there was danger

Once again, despite the DPD's recommendation about using the direct object for the person, the most common form in Spain is to use the de with le rather than lo/la.

-Le advirtieron de que había peligro — They warned him that there was danger

3. Advertir (algo) a alguien= warn someone (about something).

This form is more common with a subordinate clause, especially outside Spain where the de is less frequent.

"El objeto de la advertencia se expresa mediante un complemento directo y el complemento de persona es indirecto".

-Advirtieron a Juan que corría peligro — They warned Juan that he was in danger

Le advirtieron que corría peligro — They warned him that he was in danger

Se lo advirtieron — They warned him about it

When advertir is used to threaten or to caution someone, it is more commonly used without the preposition de.

"Este régimen es el habitual cuando el complemento directo es una oración subordinada introducida por la conjunción que, y especialmente cuando la intención es admonitoria o amenazante".2

-Le advirtieron que si no pagaba se arrepentiría — They warned him that if he didn't pay he would regret it

-Te advierto que voy a denunciarte — I'm warning you. I'm going to report you.

When there is only the person being warned and not the thing, the personal pronoun alternates between lo and le, where le implies that there is an unexpressed thing being warned about.

-Advirtieron a Juan, pero no les hizo caso — They warned Juan, but he didn't take any notice

-Lo advirtieron, pero no les hizo caso They warned him, but he didn't take any notice

-Le advirtieron, pero no les hizo caso — They warned him, but he didn't take any notice

4. Advertir que alguien haga algo = To warn someone to do something.

When advertir is used to give advice or warn someone to do something, it is used without the preposition de and the personal pronoun should be in the dative (le).

"Cuando advertir significa ‘aconsejar [algo] a alguien’, es transitivo; lo que se aconseja se expresa mediante un complemento directo y, naturalmente, se construye sin preposición; el complemento de persona es indirecto".

-Le advirtieron que no pagara el rescate — They warned him not to pay the ransom

Avisar

Avisar follows a similar pattern to advertir.4

When there is a subordinate clause, the most common form is with le and without de

-Le avisaré que has llegado — I'll let her know that you have arrived

Se lo avisaré — I'll tell her/him that

The DPD recommends using the accusative (la, lo ) with the preposition de.

"El complemento de persona es, en esta construcción, el complemento directo, pues funciona como sujeto de la pasiva: El embajador fue avisado de la llegada del presidente. Por ello, cuando este complemento es un pronombre átono de tercera persona, deben emplearse las formas lo(s), la(s)".

However, like advertir, it is far more commonly used with le in Spain.

-Le avisaré del cambio — I'll inform him/her of the change

-Le avisaré de que ya has llegado — I'll let her know that you have arrived

When only the person appears in the sentence, the direct object pronoun (lo, la) is more common; but in Spain le is often used instead of lo.

-¿Puedes decirle a Juan que he llegado?  -Claro. Lo/le avisaré — -Can you tell Juan that I've arrived. -Sure. I'll let him know

-La avisé, pero parece que no ha venido — I told her, but it looks like she hasn't come

Similar to advertir, the form without de is preferred when it implies a threat or a caution.

"Cuando avisar implica la existencia de amenaza se prefiere, como en el caso de advertir, la construcción sin la preposición de"4

-Te aviso que no voy a aceptar tonterías —  I'll tell you now that I'm not going to take any crap

I warned him that if he didn't get his act together he would have to go
