tú o usted - cuándo tutear

One of the most challenging aspects of learning a new language, as an English speaker, is having to learn and grasp the so-called T-V distinction: when to address your conversation partner as  and when to use usted.

The use of usted has decreased enormously over the last century in Spain, whilst in Latin America use of usted has remained fairly constant. For example, in the early 20th century (e.g. Acacias 38) children would address their parents using usted; in the mid/late 20th-century (e.g. Cuéntame cómo pasó) colleagues and new acquaintances would generally use usted in most scenarios; in 21st-century Spain (e.g. Servir y proteger), meanwhile, usted is considerably more limited, and is generally reserved for formal situations, work environments or when addressing the elderly. Some predict that in the not-too-distant future usted will disappear altogether.

The following newspaper extract describes the change that has taken place in the advertising sector, where use of now predominates; its familiarity and modern feel make it a more attractive choice for most businesses.

Guidelines in Spain:

1) Kids and young adults (under 25) almost always tú a tú among themselves.

2) If the person is of similar age (between approx 25 and 50 yrs old) and there is little familiarity:

  • a) in a professional/work environment, especially in positions of authority, professionals, civil servants, doctors, police, etc., it's best to start off with usted

  • b) in a social or relaxed environment, e.g. a party, bar, street, probably start with , but usted may also be used if in doubt.

-¿Eres amigo de Juan? (recién conocido en una fiesta)

-¿Os apetece tomar algo? (en la calle, recién conocido)

3) Above 50-55 years old usted is generally used for new acquaintance or little familiarity whether older or the same age.

4) If you are an employee, most companies will use usted with all customers. If dealing with predominantly young modern customers, though,  may sound more natural.

-¿Quieren tomar un aperitivo? (camarero)

5) The way someone is dressed, or any other subtle 'status symbols' are also likely to affect one's choice: a 30-yr-old in suit and tie may be more of usted than a 50-yr-old in baggy hippie trousers smoking a joint. The left-right duality in Spain is always present.

6) In written Spanish things are very similar. Most formal or official communciation will use usted. Students are encouraged to use usted in emails when addressing officialdom or new contacts, but is becoming increasingly common among colleagues, acquaintances and even first contact between businesses. The traditional Muy señores míos or Estimado señor/a sounds far too stuffy in most contexts; a simple Buenos días and addressing with  is by far the most common pattern in everyday communication –see Cómo empezar un correo.

Inevitably, as a learner, you will put your foot in it occasionally, but through time you will get a feel for when to tutear; while some will be flattered, others may take offence by being tuteado by a youngster or new aquaintance.

In general, your conversation partner will ask you to tutear (apear el tratamiento) shortly after the first contact in cases where there is doubt. It's better to err on the side of caution and be corrected than assume that will be fine.

Further notes:

1) Remember: in America and certain regions of Spain (e.g. Canary Islands) ustedes is the only option when addressing plural second-person (where vosotros isn't used).

2) As discussed previously, the indirect object pronoun (le) tends to be used instead of lo when referring to a male as a direct object.

3)  As discussed previously, the pronoun usted, when explicitly mentioned, tends to go in the postverbal position when not used emphatically or to contrast; this is not the norm with the other personal pronouns. Nowadays, the word usted is generally only stated explicitly when there may be ambiguity with a third person or when used emphatically or for contrast.

 4) In written Spanish, usted is sometimes abbreviated to Vd. or, more commonly, Ud.3
