Conocer, when used in the sense of 'to know for the first time' (interpretación incoativa), can be a stumbling block for learners. Since 'to meet' can only be used for people, with things or places we have to say 'to get to know', 'to discover', 'to visit' or similar. [See saber vs. conocer]

-Vamos a Madrid este finde para conocer la ciudad — We're going to Madrid this weekend to get to know the city

-Me encantaría conocer la India — I would love to visit/go to India

-Conoció la electricidad en 1968 — She first used/was introduced to electricity in 1968
